Disability Access at the Magrath Library

Physical Access

Parking: Parking lots S102 and S104 on Buford Ave are the parking facilities closest to Magrath. Call (612) 626-PARK for more information. See also, Directions to Magrath Library For Patrons Who Need Disability Parking.

Building Access: Full access is available on the northeast side of the building at Buford Ave (enter through the Vocational and Technical Education Building) or through the parking garage on Gortner Ave (enter through Magrath library).

Elevators are located in the center of the building and are wheelchair accessible.

Restrooms are on all floors except the ground floor.

Maps of the campus libraries are available at the Reference/Circulation Desk, or call (612) 626-2281 for a copy.

Equipment

Adaptive/Low Vision: Listening Viewing Area. Equipment includes one closed-circuit television reader, and tape players.

Enhanced LUMINA workstation with a large screen and font enlargement capabilities is located on the ground floor, across from the Reference Desk.

Wheelchair-height LUMINA workstations: All floors have accessible workstations next to the elevators.

Microfilm Readers: Wheelchair-accessible microfilm reader on the first floor in the A - G periodical area.

Telephones on ground floor, outside the library, but in the building are at wheelchair accessible height. Pay phone TTY is located across the street in the St. Paul Student Center.

Access to Books and Periodicals in Magrath Library

Retrieving materials from the stack shelves: Reference/Circulation staff will page (retrieve) needed items from the shelves for you.

Paging Hours: On-demand paging is available these hours:

Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you can't come to the library during these hours, call the Circulation Desk at (612) 624-2215 during paging hours and request that the materials be paged and held for you at the Circulation Desk. If at all possible, paging requests should be submitted in advance, either in person or by phone.

Libraries to U is a document delivery service provided to mobility- or visually-impaired students to ensure access to library materials. Service includes delivery of books or photocopies of articles to the campus address or the circulation desk of choice. There is a small fee for article photocopying. Contact DSO at (612) 624-4037 to speak with a disability specialist to determine eligibility for this service.

Proxy cards: Any student, staff, and faculty with mobility or visual impairment may request proxy cards for their personal assistants to charge out library materials for them. For further information or to pick up an application form, check with the Circulation Desk at Magrath Library, (612) 624-2215. Students may need to register with the Disabilities Office located at 16 Johnston Hall, (612) 624-4037; fax (612) 625-5572.

Periodicals: Staff at the Reference/Circulation Desk will page needed items, set up microfilm readers if needed, and bring items to the photocopy service. If possible, please call (612) 624-2233 in advance, to notify staff when you will arrive. Up to five volumes can be held for a patron. Staff will extend the loan period, usually for one week.

Library Services

The Reference desk is located on the ground floor of Magrath Library. Consult reference staff for questions about searching MNCAT and other LUMINA databases; help identifying periodical indexes and reference books for your topic, and just about any other question you have about using the libraries. Call (612) 624-1212 for Reference assistance.

If your research requires very specialized and/or lengthy consultation, it may not be possible for reference staff to meet all of your research needs within the parameters of the reference desk service. Please call ahead for extended services such as a tour of a branch or unit, help finding numerous bibliographic sources, advice about selecting and using very specialized sources or a lengthy consultation on term paper research. If your request falls within a particular subject area, please call and set up an appointment to meet with the library staff person who has responsibility for collecting library material in your subject area.

Intensive or Long-Term Research Assistance. For intensive or long-term research assistance, please contact the Disabilities Services Office at (612) 624-4037.

Closed-Caption Video-recordings Collection, LRC, 15 Walter Library: Wilson Library selectors in the Humanities and Social Sciences have purchased a number of closed-captioned video-recordings. The collection is housed in the Learning Resources Center, Walter Library, on the east bank of campus. The Reference Desk, ground floor, Magrath, has a list of the titles. For more information call the LRC at (612) 624-1584.

Photocopy Services: A self-service photocopier with enlargement capabilities in the lobby is available all hours the building is open. Photocopy services can make copies from books, journals, microfiche, microfilm, maps, etc. They sell computer discs and photocopy cards. Staff will also make enlargements of library guides free of charge. Due to copyright laws, there are some restrictions on what and how much material can be copied.

Access to Materials in Other Libraries: Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) provides access to materials that are not available at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Request forms are available at the Reference/Circulation counter on the ground floor. Please indicate on the request form any requirements for special formats or on-campus delivery preferences for loans. Articles will be mailed to the address provided. Staff are available to assist with filling out request forms. To place an order by phone, please identify your need for assistance. Generally, there is no charge for ILL. You will be notified if your request cannot be filled without incurring a charge.

Online Requests for Interlibrary Loan from WorldCat and RLIN BIB:

If you find a listing in WorldCat* or RLIN Bibliographic File** for a book not owned by the University Libraries, you may send a request directly to the Interlibrary Loan Office from the record screen in WCAT or RLIN. Once you have selected a citation, follow the prompts to "request" in RLIN or to "order" in OCLC. To access WCAT or RLIN, go to the LUMINA menu and choose "other." For more information ask at the Reference desk on ground floor of Magrath Library.
