Instructions for Placing Materials on Reserve

Magrath Library maintains a reserve collection of books, photocopies, and audio-visual materials used for related courses.
Locate the reserve items you would like to borrow by searching the Twin Cities Course Reserves Catalog by course number, department or instructor.
Once you find the desired item, write down the call number and give it to the circulation staff.
Generally, three photocopies or one book may be checked out at one time.
Course reserve materials may be checked out for 2 HOURS, 3 DAYS, or OVERNIGHT (after 4 p.m.), depending on the professor's instructions.
Overnight reserves are due one hour after the library opens the next day.
Three-day reserves are due by closing of the third day.
No advance HOLDS are placed on reserve materials
Instructors may request materials owned by the University of Minnesota Libraries or provide their own materials, including books and photocopies, to be placed on reserve at Magrath Library.
To place materials on reserve, fill out a course reserve card for each item. These forms may be requested in person at the library or found online: Reserve Request Form (PDF).

Instructor Responsibilities Relating to Fair Use
When using copyrighted works for course reserves under the provisions of Fair Use (Section 107), the following instructor responsibilities apply:
Applications of fair use are predicated on the Libraries' General Principles of Fair Use in Education, and require access controls that restrict access to reserve materials to only registered students and their instructors of that course.

Reserve materials from many classes on the Twin Cities campus are currently available online.
These can be accessed using the Electronic Reserve link on the Libraries' course reserves page.
Articles, syllabi, class notes and sample exams can be placed online so that students can access them remotely. .
